"Eve"  My Foundation Bitch

aka "The Old Goat"

Ch Windriver's Crimson Arrow LCM, CD, SC, CGC, VC, ROM

August 8, 1987 - February 13, 2002

Eve was my first Ridgeback, the foundation of Rare Earth and the most intelligent creature I've ever run across. She had her physical faults, but her character was flawless. She had wisdom, common sense, and an inner calm the Dalai Lama would envy. Eve changed and enriched my life in so many ways, how do I describe the journey?  1) Remember food IS good  2) She hated to have her nails cut  3) A good day involved killing a ground hog, eating a ground hog and rolling in a long dead ground hog! 4)  Eve put up with my “pop and jerk” method of obedience training and I'm sure she was greatly relieved when I "discovered" that treats and praise worked better.  5)  Coursing is fun!  Eve had a signature chortle (or turkey song) at the line. She learned that cheating is more energy efficient than running the entire course. It seems no one since has mastered the art of shredding a plastic bag into microscopic pieces like she did.....much to the dismay of hunt masters everywhere!  This trait of shredding bags has been passed down from generation to generation and is a true sign of a Rare Earth coursing dog.

Please bear with me while I list her accomplishments of which I'm very proud and Eve couldn't have cared less:

  • '88 National Specialty, She didn't place and it could have been because, as Diane Jacobson said, "been standing a little close to the feedbag?"
  • '90 National Speciaty, 1st place Novice A Obedience
    • earned her CD and her Conformation Championship
  • '91 She whelped her first litter, by Billy, that resulted in 5 Ch, 2 CD, 2 FCh, 1 LCM, 3 ROM's, 2 VC's and the '96 Westminster Ridgeback winner
  • ‘93 She whelped her second litter, by Bidoux, that resulted in 4 Ch, 1 CD, 1 CDX, 3 FCh, 2 LCM's, and 1 VC
  • '94 National Specialty Triathlon participant
    • # 10 ranked RRCUS lure courser
    • earned her RRCUS Register of Merit, ASFA FCH and her Versatility Certificate
  • ‘96 National Specialty winner of the Brood Bitch class and Triathlon participant
  • '97 Earned her ASFA Lure Courser of Merit
  • '98 National Specialty, the TOTALLY unexpected 2nd place in Veteran Obedience!  NBQ in Veteran Stake in lure coursing and 4th in Veteran sweeps
  • ‘99 National Specialty, 1st place in Veteran sweeps, 9-11 bitches (and I think the oldest RR in CO)
  • '01 RRCUS field trial in Michigan, test dog extraordaire!

There will never be another like her for me.  I was truly blessed to have had the opportunity to know her.  I don't know how to thank her for all she gave me.  She was a good honest dog and I still miss her terribly.
