The Fourth Dog

In lure coursing, there is a tradition that is sometimes observed at the start of a trial.  It is called “The Fourth Dog” and is a gesture made to honor those dogs that have gone to the Rainbow Bridge.   To remember their departed hounds, owners are invited to step up to the start line with a slip lead.  At the “Tally Ho” from the hunt master, they slip their departed hound to chase the bunnies around the course, one more time.  Often, as the dogs are running, someone will read the poem “The Rainbow Bridge” by an unknown author.

Because of my love of lure coursing, instead of “The Rainbow Bridge”, I’d like to share a poem with you written by a friend, Cindy Ackerman.

       The Fourth Dog

Look not at the line

For I am not there

But out in the field

I am everywhere

No need for a blanket

Nor a slip lead

I run like the wind

With determination and speed

Watch for me on the lure

I'll be in full stride

I'll be the one coursing

With friends at my side

After all the hounds have raced

The trial comes to its end

I'll watch over you

Your forever faithful friend

So when you hear "Tally Ho!"

In your memory, I will run...

For I am the fourth dog

And I'm still having fun!
